Generation M

Happy New Year!

Sasa tuko in the 2nd decade of the 21st century ile ya for real for real🤣.

So now in the spirit of Valentine’s, you are about to read my most memorable Valentine’s. It’s the most memorable because it’s the only one that someone actually got something for just me. Ok, I was in that “grandeur school in Kiambu that you all love to hate”. (If you actually know the dondoo for this phrase get yourself a Fanta Orange, the madiaba one, on my bill).

I digress🤦🏿‍♀️. I was talking about my grandeur school. The PTA always ensured that each of the 1500+ of us got a stem of rose flower and a special meal, on every 14th of February. By a special meal I don’t mean RnB. There was pilau (was mostly coloured rice but ni sawa tu), chapos, vegetable salad, chicken (I remember we used to eat kuku a bit frequently but I’m not so sure whether Valentine’s was one of those times) and soda. Yaani we used to have a better Valentine’s than people in the ‘out there’. To add to it, during my first Valentine’s at the school, Madam First Lady, who apparently was or still is the school’s patron, got each one of us a bar of chocolate. Sigh!

Lol! I didn’t have to tell you about Valentine’s in my high school because it’s not relevant in this story, but I’ve already typed it and no I cannot delete because I don’t want to.

In my last year of high school, I’d started dating like 6 months earlier. He was in high school as well, in his last year. So practically, we are agemates. Since he was also in school I didn’t expect anything from him. I mean he was in a school miles away and we are both part of generation M. Being part of generation M meant you didn’t have time to write mails and look for lovey dovey stamps to send to your girlfriend in Kiambu bushes, because Dr. M had made life a bit tough for final year high school students, sisi sasa.

Valentine’s in that year was on a Tuesday. Of course in school there was the usual ‘love in the air’ vibe. And generally that whole week’s top activity was reading Valentine’s mails sent to our classmates and feeling cute when you come across ‘S/O to all back-benchers in the house. Nawarank sana’ sticky notes by a dude who prolly didn’t mean to give you shout-outs but instead he just wanted to poxy himself on that mail🤣. High School was such a vibe you guys!

Fast forward to Friday evening that week. At around 2140hrs, I was about to head out to a form 2 class. Then I heard the babe that used to sit next to the front class door whisper my name loudly. Just to put you into context, for some reason my classmates were exceptionally quite that evening and I used to sit at the most back left corner of the class. So when this babe whispered my name, she attracted everyone’s attention.

Then girls that used to sit huko mbele started whispering “Eisht amepata success card”. So I had to sit and chill for that card to get to me, because si you remember I was leaving class? I was a very reserved person, still I’m. So as soon as it got to me, I locked it in my desk and left class. There was no way I was going to open an A4 card with everyone looking at me.

Preps used to end at 2200hrs so by 2210hrs, every one of my classmates had left class. I even I’m not sure whether I took that evening’s coffee (oh how I miss raptaptap) because I was so eager to find out who had sent me such a huge success card in MID-FEBRUARY!!!

Heh kumbe this dude had taken his time to look for the largest Valentine’s card he could get. I actually feel like A4 is a smaller size than that card. I still have that card at home to date, 4 years later😅. He literally poured out his heart on that card. I shed a tear or two😭. In my defense, machozi yangu huwa ready kuroll down my chubby cheeks, always ready. He’d also made a white and black beaded shambala with either a mix of our names or just his name. So cute! You won’t believe it when I say I used to wear that shambala every night before sleeping. I was a high school babe in love, so don’t come laughing at me aki priss(insert Tugi’s voice).

I’m adding a ‘Grateful Hour’ segment because this year I want to intentionally acknowledge what I’m grateful for. You might as well opt to join me in this. You can do this by typing what you are grateful for, at the comment section. So that means as you go through each day of the week, look out for what you are grateful for and then purpose to share it with us on Friday, (I hope I remain consistent with posting on Friday evenings), at the comment section.

And you don’t have to live through a life-time experience for you to be grateful. Learn to be grateful for the every day events as well. For instance, this week I’m grateful that I got to wake up in time for breakfast juzi. I have 0700hr classes and waking up in time for both breakfast and on-time logging in to class has been a struggle.
