Last night we had a discussion with my aunt that extended into the wee hours of today. This conversation made me realize that there is a very thin line when it comes to respecting and fearing the spiritual authorities around us. By spiritual authorities I mean Pastors, Reverends, Bishops, Fathers or whatever title you use to address them in your respective churches.
My bestie, Google, defines respect as a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements. She goes ahead to define fear as an unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined. Trying to study these two words blurs the thin line further and that explains why there is so much religion brainwashing especially in Kenya.
Now last night’s discussion was not about the brainwashing per se, but about how these people are shown so much respect that at times borders fear, by their congregants. Personally, I never saw the razzmattazz surrounding Pastors today, growing up. Therefore, it is quite hard for me to understand why a pastor would drive around in a convoy of the latest German machines with a squad of bodyguards running alongside the vehicles. I don’t get why a congregation would hold a fundraiser to buy a car for their pastor. I’m not talking about a church vehicle that the MoG can use while attending to his congregants. I’m referring to vehicles that will be registered under their name, meaning it is their personal possession. In as much as I don’t agree with these events, I respect the views of congregants that choose to love on their spiritual authorities in this manner. I wish we all let people respect their pastors in ways that they choose to respect them. I mean if they really are not using any of your money and resources to love on their pastors, why are you trashing them?

Today while driving to work, I saw one of my colleagues along the way. Normally, I’ll stop and have them join me in the car. I’m so used to stopping anywhere to allow them board the vehicle that today I stopped right next to a police stop. I did not realize that that was a traffic irregularity until my dad mentioned it. Luckily, the police officers let us go even without asking questions. Heh, let me just say God is always behind the wheel when I’m driving. Sasa ningetoa wapi multi-thousands za kulipa fine?!?🤣
