JUNE!

Happy New Month!

I had so much fun last month. For a birthday month, that was A1 enjoyment! Let me do a quick recap of moments I’ll remember for a hot minute.

DIANI

Relax, it’s not me that visited the South Coast, but my dad’s staff members. This was a highlight for me because those babes were so happy. I’ve realized I genuinely love seeing people around me happy so much, that at times it feels like my own happiness. I loved how excited they were while checking in and the banter they served us on the office group chat, throughout their stay at Diani.

SANDTON

Again, relax! Sikufika South Africa 😂. Sandton is a hotel on Taveta road, off Accra road. I found myself there on one Friday evening and I’ll definitely go back on another random Friday. This is not your typical go to place for vibes, but I did love their one-man band session, that I assume happens every Friday between 2000hrs and 2100hrs. Kwanza on that Friday, this man was singing ‘Zilizopendwa’. I am a huge fan of those songs and therefore watching someone perform them live, was a little paradise here on earth.

SCHOOL

School took up 95% of my birthday month. The gherroo!!! I was either prepping for a CAT, or preparing slides for a class presentation or working on my project or trying to keep up with classwork. For a while, the hype that I normally have around my birthday season died down. Now that I’m typing this, I realize this is the first semester I haven’t had a ‘due at 2359hrs’ assignment 🤣. Anyway, next year I won’t have to think about school, at least not in June.

AMERU NIGHT

I take so much pride in being a Meru. Me, I am a daughter of the soil! So when I saw the announcement for an Ameru night online, I knew I wasn’t going to miss that for anything. I am so happy that some of my Meru babes were game, because I don’t think I’d have gone to a night club, alone. Dancing to Meru tunes, with other Citizens of the USA (United States of Ameru), was really it. I am grateful that my parents took time to teach us Kimeru and opened us up to the Meru culture. I owe my children so much, and top on that list is to make sure they fully understand and embrace their roots. I can’t pass on the Meru heritage if I don’t know anything about it. I therefore am actively trying to learn as much as I can, about our culture.

CHAGUO

This and the Ameru night were two very spontaneous plans 😂. Chaguo is a Kenyan film recently released and was being screened at Prestige Cinemas. The film is about a couple that’s preparingt to get married, during the election season. The election period comes with political forces that threaten to sabotage the relationship. I wish so many more Kenyans would watch that film, because it has perfectly captured events we experience around this hot season. A side note: I now would like to visit other cinemas in Nairobi. Send invites to watch films in any other cinema that’s not Prestige. I can sit through any genre of films, spare for crime and violent genres.

*This film is back. It’s currently being screened at Prestige, up to 8th of this month.

KEREITA FOREST

I finally got to tick this off my bucket list. Yo, an acquaintance told me of this place in 2019 and since then we’ve been telling each other how we need to go there, for the ziplines. I didn’t go with her, but I hope she sees this because I know she’ll be so mad at me 🤭. First off, I knew it would be cold, but I didn’t expect it to be that cold. While ziplining, I was taking in bouts of cold wind, at some point I thought I’d stop breathing 🤣. However, those two minutes in the air were beautiful. I’m glad I allowed the instructor to take photos and a video, because I’ve been looking at them all week.

The Forest, is an ideal venue for small groups’ team building events. Their activities are so varied. There’s ziplining, paint balling, horse riding, bike riding, archery, nature walk and camping. There’s an activity for literally everyone. They have a restaurant and bar as well, so you can comfortably spend a whole day there.

FISHERMAN CAMP

I don’t remember enjoying a boat ride as much as I enjoyed this one on Lake Naivasha. It was a one-hour ride, and we had a very engaging instructor. He answered our questions in detail and even identified several birds by their name. What struck me most is the effects the lake’s flooding in 2020 had on the businesses set up along the lake. It is very interesting that I don’t remember hearing news of those floods so through out that ride I was wondering where I was in 2020 because they must have made headlines. A sizeable chunk of land of one of the flower companies is now marginal land, one of the camps was completely destroyed by the floods, Fisherman actually lost some of its land to the floods. Guys, a lot happened during those floods.

FOGO GAUCHO

This was my highlight of the month. A visit that’s been on my bucket list for almost three years now.

For this, I prefer to go back and take good photos and have it as a restaurant review. Before then, Fogo is really the place to have your birthday dinner. Their customer service is A1 and all the stories you’ve heard about the meats are true.
